PostgreSQL Mastery

Have you ever written a PostgreSQL query that worked, but felt like there must be a better way?

Most of us learn the basics of SQL and stop there. But PostgreSQL has a lot of features that can replace several queries, or a chunk of application code, with one clear statement.

PostgreSQL Mastery builds on what you already know and shows you those features step by step, with exercises along the way, so you can become the go-to PostgreSQL person in your team.

You'll be able to:

  • Group your data in exactly the combinations you want, using GROUPING SETS, CUBE and ROLLUP
  • Use window functions with frames and window clauses to rank results and refer to other rows
  • Pivot and unpivot data, and write nested and recursive CTEs
  • Store, query and filter JSON data, and use lateral joins
  • Work with transactions, locks and deadlocks, and choose the right data types, including ranges
  • Use psql, the PostgreSQL command line, and add extensions to your database

Frequently Asked Questions

How much SQL should I know first?

You should be comfortable creating tables, writing SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE statements, using WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING and ORDER BY, and joining tables. If you've completed SQL Simplified, this is the next step.

What software do you use?

I use DBeaver with a PostgreSQL database on my computer. You can use pgAdmin, VS Code or any other editor, because almost everything shown is SQL.

Is this for other databases too?

The syntax and examples are all for PostgreSQL. Some concepts apply to other databases, and I have separate Mastery courses for Oracle and SQL Server.

My team doesn't use PostgreSQL. Will this help me?

You probably won't use it much in your current role. But it builds skills you can take into future roles, and you'll be ready if your team starts using PostgreSQL.

I don't have much time. Will I get through it?

The lessons are short, you get everything as soon as you enrol, and you keep access for life. The course PDF is there to refresh your memory when you need a feature weeks or months later.
