Effective SQL Server Stored Procedures

Have you ever opened a stored procedure at work and struggled to follow what it was doing?

Stored procedures can feel like a different language from the SQL you already know. There are variables, loops, parameters and error handling, and most explanations assume you've seen it all before.

Effective SQL Server Stored Procedures starts with your very first procedure and builds up to the techniques used in real projects, one step at a time.

You'll be able to:

  • Write, run and change stored procedures, starting with a simple "hello world"
  • Use variables and input and output parameters, and insert, update and select data from a procedure
  • Control the flow of your code with IF statements and loops, and handle and log errors
  • Create user-defined functions and triggers, including an audit table
  • Debug your procedures in Visual Studio and write tests using tSQLt
  • Keep your code in version control with GitHub, and know when to use (and avoid) cursors

What's included

  • 10 modules and 58 short video lessons (about 5 to 10 minutes each)
  • SQL scripts for every lesson, plus scripts to help with procedure development, like querying the data dictionary
  • The complete course as a PDF for offline reading and reference
  • Lifetime access, plus a comments section to ask me questions

"Luckily I really enjoyed modules about installing database, SSMS or Visual Studio :) and this is what I wanted!... I like the real life examples, that we are doing actual and real stuff." Michal Z

"Your explanations are so clear and concise that you don't need to go on and on and on as I have heard others do." Donna M

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know advanced SQL Server concepts?

No. You only need a basic understanding of SQL, such as creating a table and writing SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE statements. The course includes the scripts and steps for anything else.

What software do you use?

I mainly use SQL Server Management Studio, with SQL Server 2016 on Windows and the Wide World Importers sample database. For debugging I use Visual Studio, because SSMS doesn't include a debugger, and for testing I use tSQLt.

My team doesn't use stored procedures. Will this help me?

It can. You can write your own procedural scripts to work with data without creating stored procedures, and you'll have the skills ready for future roles.

I don't have much time. Will I get through it?

The lessons are short, you get everything as soon as you enrol, and you keep access for life. The course PDF is there to refresh your memory when you need it later.
